Cation exchange & Anion exchange use the chemical ion exchange process to exchange anions or cations on a “Resin Bed” for cations & anions of the contaminant that needs to be removed form the water.

The cations & anions on the resins are eventually exhausted & replaced by the cations & anions of the contaminant being removed. When this occurs, the bed must be backwashed using a concentrated solution of the base cation or anion. Which recharges the bed & flushes the built-up contaminant.

Cation exchange can be used to treat for Calcium, Magnesium (i.e. Hardness), Sodium, Al, Fe etc., whereas anion exchange can be used to treat for Chloride, Sulphate, Nitrate & Alkalinity etc.Demineralisation of water above 600 to 700 ppm Total Dissolved Solids may be uneconomical.
