Water treatment ion exchange resins are small, porous beads made from synthetic polymers that are used to remove unwanted ions from water by exchanging them with more desirable ions, effectively purifying the water by essentially "trapping" contaminants like calcium, magnesium, and heavy metals within the resin beads while releasing cleaner ions back into the water stream; this process is particularly useful for softening hard water and removing specific contaminants depending on the type of resin used and the intended application of the treated water.
